Love Thai food and want to learn to cook it at home? The island now has a modern Culinary Institute offering daily Thai Cooking classes both mornings and afternoons. Aspiring divers take note. Samui is a great place to get PADI certified. There are many companies offering instruction not only in Open Water Diving, but in advanced areas as well, and no matter where you come from, there is almost sure to be an instructor available who can teach you in your native language. Those who would like to learn windsurfing or sailing can do so at one of several beachside venues.
NOTE: Sea conditions can get rough and windy on the North Shore (from Chaweng to Maenam) during the months of December through March, and some watersports operations are not always open during these months. If planning to learn watersports during this period, it's best to have an alternative plan in case the weather does not cooperate. Tennis
Samui's well-known USPTR tennis instructor and USTA 6.0 rated player Darren Kemble, gives friendly private instruction on a hourly basis at several of the island's larger hotels. Everyone from absolute beginnners to advanced tournament players are welcome. Equipment is provided free of charge.Thai Language
If you would like to begin learning to speak Thai, there is a language school in Bophut offering instruction. Private tudors who teach on a hourly basis are also available.Thai Massage
The art of Traditional Thai Massage can be learned at the government-run Angthong Health Center in the village of Nathon. Three-day 18 hour courses (taught in Thai) can be arranged at a cost of approximately 5000 baht, (with discounts for more than one student.) If you cannot speak Thai, it is probably best to go there with a Thai acquaintance to make arrangements, rather than attempting to phone. To find the center, enter Nathon on the main road from the direction of Maenam, and turn right at Bangkok Bank. It is located across the street from the Tourism Information Center.
